I mean, if you're just taking that at face value, this pretty short statement coming from that foreign minister that does indicate that there's a line toward talks improving there.
We also obviously had that statement from Pakistan and Qatar.
They've been the mediators on all of this, saying that there is some of that progress made.
I think the big question, though, is where's Donald Trump in all of this?
Where's the U.S.
side of this?
We're still waiting for
a statement to come out from the Americans.
So we'll see whether or not we've got something there that kind of confirms the fact that this progress is being made.
Remember, there's still about a 60-day negotiation process with preliminary talks.
So I think anything can really happen there.
What Akasawa, the trade negotiator, was originally intending to do was go to Washington and sort of talk through some of the issues that Japan is seeing with some tariffs that they say that they agreed to with the United States earlier this summer.
They originally had agreed to a lower auto tariff, 15 percent, and they also were trying to avoid the stacking of tariffs on top of each other.
It seemed like at this point the U.S.
