But I think the people there find it valuable to have that kind of a discourse rather than just post your random thought and people yell at you.
That's not even interesting.
Yeah, it's pretty clear.
If we think about a topic like abortion, and so imagine a kind and thoughtful Catholic priest and a kind and thoughtful Planned Parenthood activist, they're never going to agree on the fundamentals.
But because I said kind and thoughtful,
They can be quite jovial and friendly to each other and they can be respectful and they can build a relationship around a love for the ideas and things like that.
And they can present the topic in a way that both of them are proud of and can say that it's fair.
And so in a lot of contexts, we can have that where we can say, okay, well, like the content of our debate is different.
And, you know, it's interesting.
even, you know, the whole concept of an ad hominem argument, I mean, one of the rules of Wikipedia, no personal attacks, is exactly around that, to say, like, actually, yeah, we can debate the ideas, and we can chew on how to make the encyclopedia better, and even if we don't agree, we can still respect each other as people, and we can actually get on and become great friends.
Actually, one of the things that's very, very helpful is face-to-face meetups, and we can't always do that because, particularly in the larger languages like English, Wikipedia, it's
People can't really have one single meetup.
But we do have an annual conference every year and a lot of super active editors come together.
And it makes a difference because people, you know, it's quite easy behind the wheel of your car, to go back to your previous example, or behind a keyboard, to get very angry and very upset.
And obviously we're human beings and we are working online, so these things happen.
But again, we have the culture that says, like, okay, if you fly off the handle at somebody,
You should probably apologize, right?
And you should, you know, like, take a break and chill out.
Yeah, so the way we say it is that on any controversial topic, Wikipedia itself shouldn't take a side, but should present all the sides fairly.
