there were so many layers and so many different I mean I get the impression you're totally at ease with yourself totally at ease happy to be Jay when you're Jay and you're happy to perform as Jay did because that's how you earn a very good living and well done you and I love to pop my hand into that pot of gender expression and I feel lucky to be able to do that and it's performance and I'm so inspired by really over the top women and I love to channel that in what I do

We begin to patch our relationship a little bit when I'm in my early 20s and I'm living in London.

The irony here is I was listening to David Bowie with him when I was a kid and Grace Jones and all these sort of genderqueer artists.

My family kept it from him.
My mom, um, never told him.
