They're about trust.

And a lot of times they're about anxieties.

And the moment your work threatens someone's identity or their comfort, they're going to push back no matter how much sense you are making.

That's not dysfunction.

That's human nature.

So your job is not just to explain your research or your design or your proposal.

It's your job to manage the emotions around it.

Let me give you a quick story to try and explain this.

I was working on a product redesign once with a team where the lead product manager had written most of the current interface himself.

And every time I proposed a change, he'd question it, not just once, over and over and over again, in public, in private, on Slack, on calls.

Now, keep in mind, they brought me into this organization as a consultant because they weren't happy with what he had designed.

And even so, they're paying me because this guy did a shit job and he is still fighting me.

Now, at first I thought, okay, well, he's just being defensive, you know.

And eventually I realized he's afraid, okay?

This wasn't just about the interface that he designed.

It was about his work.

It was about his identity.

His name was all over this.

And here I am coming in, telling him and everyone else essentially that this isn't good enough.

Of course he was scared.
