They probably freaked him out when they brought me in in the first place.

I mean, in a polite way, it's like saying, you know what?

What you've done really sucks.

So we're going to pay this guy a lot of money that we shouldn't have to spend to fix your bullshit.

Of course he was scared.

So once I had that little revelation, I changed my approach.

I brought this guy closer to me.

I started asking him more questions.

I invited him into early sketches, the stuff I was doing on the whiteboard.

I gave him credit wherever I possibly could.

And over time, I built trust.

And over that same period of time, he went from being an obstacle to being a partner.

Once he stopped feeling threatened, he could actually hear me.

And not only could he actually hear me, he was willing to throw down and dig in with me and put our heads together and come out with a better solution.

So, how do you do all that?

How do you lead people through fear?

First, you've got to recognize it.

You've got to stop treating that resistance as ignorance.

Stop dismissing it as, well, they just don't give a shit.

Instead, treat it like a signal, okay?
