How do you assess that?

And I think we've seen with the introduction of the Kofi and King 5, you know, where they want to, these are governance tools to strengthen rather than just to have compliance tick box.

So I think the real value would lie in understanding the frameworks are there, you know, we have these rules that require certain governance, good fit and proper standards, but

they cannot be substituted for the courage, integrity, and independent thinking that is required of trustees.

So the real importance of independence is in the boardroom itself, in the questions that trustees ask, in the conflicts that they disclose, the advice that is challenged, the decisions that they are willing to defend in the interests of members.

And you know,

I will share with you at the Sangram Umbrella Fund how they recently wanted to ensure that their assessment is as objective, like you're saying, you know.

But before I go to that, the one thing that from my dissertation and my interaction with industry professionals that I picked up is that, you know, we need to focus on trustee self-mastery.

And for me, there was such a good concept that came out, you know, the ability to recognize one's own assumptions.

regulate your judgment, and remain objective under pressure.

Act with confidence and integrity in the interests of members.

Now, this self-mastery is not easy.

It's about self-reflection, understanding, am I, and it's a kind of ethical maturity that is essential, I think, for trustees to embrace not only the letter of the governance reform, but also the spirit and purpose.

And it's something I would like to engage with the FSEA around

You know, what type of courses we can put in to encourage trustees to become more confident in terms of their ability to interrogate, to challenge, because it can be a very lonely field if you just do it on yourself.

So to the question about how do trustees assess, how do you see that independence?

So it's inwardly in yourself in terms of doing the objective thinking.

And what we did at the Sallam Umbrella Fund recently to try and inform members is we obviously, like with any other fund, do our assessment around our performance, the PO, the principal, but we also introduced a 360 element in it, you know, asking our service, because we assess our service providers as part of this, but also asking the service providers, are we good in terms of our engagement with you?
