So you do have elements of pure independence, right?

Because you also want to understand the commercial thinking of the employer because it links to ultimately the betterment of the members and their outcomes, right?

And they have a role to play and a certain direction that they bring in.

What I'm trying to say is on your board, you need to look for balance from a diversity, from a level of independence, from the role of the commercial interest so that we all work together.

Because if you have totally independent board, not linked to the strategic direction of the sponsor, you're a bit lost, you understand, because you come in just totally blind.

So I would think,

Yes, you need, and that's why I say independence from an element of independence, not independence from the structures itself.

So you can have a mixture.

You can have independence of thinking, but still linked to maybe the sponsor, and then a purely independent from what's happening in industry so that you bring that balance.

You have then a board that's diverse and balanced and ultimately moving towards

the members interest, you understand?

So that's for me, I think is the secret in a good recipe board.

apply what would be the one nugget you'd want future trustees independent principal officers like yourself independent trustees also like yourself would you want that nugget to be that they carry forward uh i i gave it some thought and i think you know it's a very good opportunity because we're seeing a lot of young people coming into the industry which is good thing but the one thing i would leave the next generation you know is to hold on to

that independence is not a title.

It's not a category or a line in a report.

It is a discipline of judgment.

And in my own experience, you know, having done different roles, it's taught me that independence requires me to be curious, to be courageous,

humility as well, and a deep respect for the members whose retirement fund, you know, whose savings are entrusted into us.

So if I would, that's what I would leave to them, that, you know what, those are the things as an independent, you need to be curious, you need to be courageous, remaining, you know, humble, because you're dealing with different dynamics on a board.

And it's not about being antagonistic, it's about being humble to understand and respect
