But but look, you know, I think that what Rob Reiner said there about Charlie Kirk, I don't think the immediate wake of someone's death, especially somebody's murder.
uh is the right time to take issue with what you disagreed with right you know this that is not the time to speak ill of the dead because your thoughts and prayers genuinely uh need to be with with the family recognizing the humanity of the person's been lost even if you disagree deeply with what they said or what they believe that can be discussed in a different time on a different day but the fact that rob reiner said that i think highlights something that was lost um
because so many folks on the right wanted to say that the left writ large was celebrating Charlie Kirk's death.
Go look at President Obama's comments in the immediate wake of that assassination.
Look at Hakeem Jeffries.
Go down the line.
You can't hold Democratic Party liable for anything that anyone might say on some chat room or on social media.
That's not the way this works.
The president of the United States has particular moral responsibilities that atone for the nation.
The fact that this president doesn't.
uh and you know i'm a presidential historian on the side and and most presidents feel an obligation to try to unite the country and what's different about donald trump is he doesn't feel that moral obligation uh he thinks he can divide to conquer and he still has that impulse in the wake of a horrific senseless murder the fact of course it it seems his son is being held uh makes it all the more wrenching especially this time of year but but the other thing reiner said i've heard him say this it's about
The golden rule, he quoted Jesus, you know, do unto others.
And that's something that unites most major faiths.
And that's what's been lost.
That's what's been lost in the coarsening and the hyper-partisan politicization of our culture is that we're not extending that grace.
And that's what we need to get back to.
And Donald Trump seems incapable of doing it.
