Michael Douglas's character was carrying a big boar double rifle, which was very common among professional hunters during that timeframe, during the golden age of hunting in Africa.

Well, guys, those rifles are very expensive and they're very specialized, so they don't get a lot of widespread use, even among people hunting buffalo and elephant and whatnot today, but that is where they're most common.

Well, those sort of hunts, I think, are absolutely perfect for a red dot sight because you're shooting something that is close and...

And often you want something, the whole point of a double rifle is you get two really fast shots.

You get a good initial shot with an almost instantaneous follow-up shot.

And you're shooting a Cape Buffalo that's charging you from 15 yards or something like that, or an elephant at 10 yards or whatever.

That's what you need.

And the dichotomy that a lot of people run into hunting in Africa is by the time most people can afford to hunt in Africa, especially by the time they can afford to go on a big dangerous game safari like that and afford to pay the money for a double rifle.

Well, they're 50, 60, 70 years old.

Their eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

And it gets more difficult to resolve that problem.

iron sight combinations those rifles come with quickly and precisely but you put a red dot sight of one type or another on there and man it is absolutely perfect and those are becoming more and more common in that area and that is of course not the only circumstances that those red dots are perfect for or suitable for but I think that is almost textbook this is

This is a great place for it.

You know, I used a red dot a little bit in the military.

I went through a lot of my basic training right after I graduated with an M68 from Aimpoint on my rifle, and that was so much easier to use than the regular iron sights on the M16 and the M4.

By the time I deployed, our units had transitioned to different optics and whatnot.
