We're living like we're pinballs bouncing off of things.
System one, as Danny Kahneman would say, instead of being consciously engaging and being the master of the game, who's learning how to play the ball.
But I think the same thing goes with a lot of our mental health journeys.
Would you say that's an accurate analogy?
Paul, I want to sit with this unconscious and conscious for another minute.
To me, one of the book's organizing ideas was that we as human beings are governed by three major drives.
Assertion, so agency, protection, autonomy, those types of things.
The next one is pleasure, which has healthy and unhealthy elements to it.
But then you bring up something that really piqued my interest because when I think of the word passion struck, to me, it people mislabel it.
To me, it's really about our drive, like what drives us.
And so I loved your word that you used generative drive.
Can you talk about those three things?
How they impact us and specifically this defining term generative drive?
Even if you go back to Henry David Thoreau or William James or other great philosophers, a lot of them are really talking about this container.
Thoreau talked about quiet desperation.
He was really putting a box around the architecture of the human self and that we were living differently from the way we should.
So what I really enjoyed about the book
is this underlying notion that you have that if you're going to emotions behaviors that you want to change it gets well be beyond just symptoms management and it really gets into the core architecture and that's one of the core aspects that i thought was this linchpin to the five-part structure that you bring up is that how you think of it as an architecture and operating system
Paul, one of the things I experienced and I was diagnosed with dystemia, I can never pronounce the word, dystemia.
Yeah, dystemia.
