Appearances
of gold via coins and small investment bars is over a thousand tons a year.
So this is a very large component of the gold market.
That thousand tons of of gold has been split between emerging market physical investment and western market physical investment.
One of the trends that we've seen over the last couple of years has been slowing Western investment.
Germany, for example, usually one of the biggest buyers of coins and bars.
in the second quarter of this year was down eighty-seven percent compared to the purchases two years ago.
North America, so principally the United States, down up between forty and forty-five percent over the same period.
So Western investors, for reasons I've been speaking about before, have been buying a lot less.
But emerging market investors have been buying more, particularly out of China, India, and Turkey, all for reasons of domestic economic and political conditions.
So the Chinese economy is quite weak at the moment.
Well, it's had a big the stock market's had a big bounce in the last week.
But other than that, uh real estate's been poor, the equity market so far, year to date, has been weak.
The currency has been tending to weaken as well.
So
Chinese savers who save a remarkable proportion of their income have been moving a bit towards gold, and that's turned up in big increases in in um physical investment flows in China.
In India, similar, um, not so much a weak economy, but a strong economy.
And uh and a lot of buoyancy towards gold, both on the jewelry side but also on the investment side.
And then if you look at the experiences in terms of
Where they've had a lot of people.
You know, high inflation, currency weakness, political instability, um, buying gold as a hedge against all of those things has been remarkably popular over the last couple of years.
