Directors have been assassinated in their homes.

The opportunity to get a group of people to gather publicly and to put on a show was something that for so long was controlled by the state.

It was controlled by the state for all of my teachers.

So –

You know, for them, you know, this was not a hobby.

This was not something that you just got to do.

It was such a privilege.

It was such an honor, an honor that they performed in plays where had they been caught, they risked imprisonment.

They risked assassination.

Putting on theatrical productions that weren't state-sponsored was absolutely risking their life.

And they did it anyway, all of them.

It changed everything for me.

Oh, yeah.

The brutality there was unlike anything I had ever seen.

But so was the beauty.

And there were equal parts.

Look, I don't want to overdo the brutality.

I mean, you know, I had guns, multiple guns pulled on me.

you know, within my first week there, you know, I had, I saw, you know, people that were left dead in the street.

I saw a level of desperation, of wildness, of unbelievable disparity between those that have and those that do not.
