We begin with kids that are being fostered within sort of a farm setting here in rural UK.
He's one of them and he falls foul of that through sort of bad behaviour and continues that chain of bad behaviour through life to the very final pages of the book.
And he's a tremendously compelling character because you kind of don't get him.
You kind of don't get why his life is so troubled and so uneasy.
Fair enough.
With such engagement with the final moments of the book, he is the centre of great drama.
Amelia's another one of those little mousketeers.
Parents are interesting.
And we're in York, right?
So York is a very churchy town and Mary's dad is a reverend and they live in fancy church accommodation at one point and then don't.
And there's a falling out between the hierarchy and Mary's dad, which is interestingly sort of nebulous in the book too.
Which that does.
This gives you a sort of sense, I think, Cassie, of the complexities here.
It's a very multi-layered book and there's so much going on that I think it would need a lot of storyboarding on the part of the author to keep track.
Sadly, two-thirds in the cleaner came in.
Is that a tricky thing for the reader, though?
If for the author you need that kind of visual plotting of character and progress through the book, the reader doesn't have that.
The reader is sort of left to sort of work this out for themselves and to hold it in their own imagination and their own memory.
I want this book to come with Post-it notes.
Place is still strong in this.
