These are people who have, I think Buenos Aires at the time, it's a million Spaniards, 800,000 Italians, 400,000 Northern European Jews, 400,000 Arabs, 40,000 Germans, 30,000 French, 30,000 British and Irish.
So it's this huge mix.
Very different ideas how you should organise society.
So they have to create this national myth.
Who are we?
And football is vital to this because one of the few things they all agree on is when this team, the Blue and White Stripes, plays against Chile or Uruguay or Brazil, they want them to win.
football also pulls the whole country together, because if you're living in the jungles of Tucumán in the north, or down in Cerro del Fuego in the far south, or in the Andes to the west, or if you're living on the littoral to the east,

Broadcast from the tango halls and football commentary.
And so everybody supports the Buenos Aires team because that's where you're getting the commentary from.
So even if you're not from Buenos Aires, if you live in Teodoro Fuego, okay, I'm a wrestling fan, I'm an Independiente fan because you listen to them.
So football has this great force.
But what Lugones says is, well, the true spirit of Argentina is to be found on the pampas.
It is the gaucho.
And the great epic of Argentinian literature is Martin Fierro, which comes out in two parts, 1871 and 1876.
And it is about the declining era of the gaucho.
I suspect people haven't actually read it because it's actually quite ambiguous about the gaucho.
