And so what you get is these gaucho revivalist clubs in Buenos Aires.
You then get in 22, 23, El Grafico, the great sports magazine, particularly a writer called Chanticleer.
He says, well, actually, you find this gaucho spirit, this sort of combination of virtuosity, this sort of romantic appeal, this solitariness, this self-reliance.
You find this in the street kid, in the Peabody.
And you find him playing football on the vacant lots of the city and the Potreros.
And these games, you have a 20-year side on a small space.
They're on a hard surface.
You've got to have close technical skill.
There's no teacher there to blow the whistle when things get out of hand.
You've got to use your elbows.
There's a deliberate contradistinction to the English schools, which still exist in Buenos Aires, where football is something you play on big grassy fields and there's a teacher there to step in if things get out of hand.
And then 1928, you get Boricotto, who's the editor of El Grafico.
He writes this very famous piece.
If we were to erect a statue to the spirit of Argentinian football, it would depict a pibo.
His teeth worn down by eating yesterday's bread, shock of dark hair, his wearing a vest with, what's the phrase he uses?
Holes made by the mice of care.
So like this ragged old vest.
And basically, this sort of picaresque grin on his lips.
