But it was controversial even then.
John Adams, the second president of America, he was against slavery.
Benjamin Franklin owned slaves, but later freed them and became a proponent of abolitionism.
You know, people in Britain, during the time of the War of Independence, were saying the hypocrisy of these Americans, saying that.
They, you know, pushing for freedom and that freeing themselves of the yoke of British rule whilst owning human beings is appalling.
And so this was controversial then.
And I think what we have to understand is that historians trying to look at this now and trying to reassess, you know, those men and and how great they were.
That is not anachronistic in any way.

Yeah, and I think that it's so important if you speak to historians, they say it's really important that we are able to reassess, that we are able to look at our history again and not just accept that it's been cemented, the narratives being set in stone.
You know, I mentioned Thomas Jefferson before.
He wrote the Declaration of Independence.
He wrote those words, all men are created equal.
He owned more than six hundred human beings himself.
It's incredible.
And the views of him have been quite nuanced over the years, but it's only because of historical work carried out in the late 1990s that we know that Thomas Jefferson fathered a child with one of his slaves.
When he was in his 40s, this person was a child, a teenager.
And the view of Thomas and Jefferson as a founding father has evolved so much because of that work that his
