And I think what historians say is that both things can be true, that they can be complicated figures.
But in trying to whitewash history, all we do is turn them into two-dimensional figures and that we understand more about America's history and America's past and how it came to be the country it is today when we start

Yeah, so the the director of the the museum, Anthony Hartik, she said, you know, her role as a as a historian is about reassessing the things that earlier tellings of history left out so that more Americans can see themselves reflected in the national story.
And I think what's really interesting is that you can view this argument with the Smithsonian that Donald Trump is having as almost a continuation of something that started during his first term.
So the head of the Smithsonian, Lonnie Bunch, the first African American to be leading the institution, he's been frantically working behind the scenes to fend off these attacks from the Trump administration.
But I think it's understood that part of it might go back to some animosity between him and Trump that started during the first administration.
So there is the Museum of African American History in Washington.
It's part of the Smithsonian
It's incredible.
It's got African American culture, music, art, but also this kind of harrowing history of the slave trade.
When I visited it, I was with a former colleague of ours.
I was there reporting on it.
And at one point, this former colleague of ours was just in tears reading these exhibitions.
It's really, really powerful.
And Lonnie Bunch took Trump on a tour of this museum in 2017, and he was explaining.
The Dutch link in the slave trade, this really kind of important thing, the slave trade.
And he said afterwards that Donald Trump was very quiet.
And then he just said, you know, they love me in the Netherlands.
