It does seem like it's intimidating to a lot of these young people because they feel like they don't have enough experience or enough to say to really fill out their LinkedIn profile.
I mean, there are various elements to your profile.
There's the about section, which is just kind of a short paragraph explaining your experience and a little bit about your personality.
And I talk to some students who feel like they just don't know that they have enough to say yet to be able to fill out that part of their profile.
And then other parts of the profile that include their work experience, sometimes they feel like they just don't have enough to put on there.
know a lot of young people chase likes and put a lot of stock into the comments they get on social media platforms and the same thing is becoming true with linkedin people that have more than 500 connections on linkedin have that little designation underneath their name that says 500 plus connections and a lot of students are really trying to get that because they feel like that legitimizes them more if they have more connections they feel like employers will view them as being more credible that's not necessarily true i don't think employers
from the experts i've talked to expect college students to have that many professional connections at that point in their lives but still you know a lot of college students they feel like they're in this race to kind of get to a spot where they are taken seriously and the number of connections they have on linkedin is one way they feel they can get that and so yeah that's you know the social comparison that they go through on other social media platforms is something they're also feeling on linkedin
Visuals are very important, and especially that profile photo.
There are some people that just don't post a profile photo at all, and that's a big no-no.
Having a photo makes your profile 21 times more likely to be viewed according to LinkedIn.
So that's really important.
Employers are not going to stop on a profile where they can't see the person.
Another interesting new feature on LinkedIn is that people can post a profile video, just a very short clip where they can kind of let their personality show.
It's supposed to be brief, to the point, and very professional.
And it's posted right kind of behind their profile photo.
So if someone hovers over that profile photo, they can watch a video of that person.
Well, the experts that I talked to said that the about summary that is on LinkedIn is a really important one and that students should really focus on writing about five to seven sentences that tell a potential employer something.
that they've never met, what they should know about them.
And not using kind of bullet points and resume talk, but some things that they've learned about themselves.
Because they might not have the same degree of work experience that an older professional would have, it can be something from their life experience.
