I think that was the hook room because I remember in my Jane Austen seminar, we were talking about how novels were looked down on in Jane Austen's era and how it was considered vulgar and people were talking about how it was dangerous for women to read because it might corrupt them.
And I'm like, that was the same discourse and the same language that was being used in 1792 Korean.
I found that parallel really fascinating.
Oh, okay.
And I remember hearing stories about... I think... Yeah, like, even royals were reading it and, like, were obsessed with it.
And...
And yeah, I think it was pretty popular, but definitely Jane Austen did not get rich off those books.
Yeah.
Really?
So I actually pitched it initially as Pride and Prejudice, but with murder.
I wanted to keep the romance very like...
subplot and focus on murder investigation yeah interesting so then what was your editor's reasoning around like adding some more romance in there so she was she reminded me and she's like June you always said you wanted to you're up for a challenge and she's like you've never written a like full-on romance novel she's like why don't you give that a try
And I'm always someone who wants to grow in my craft.
And I'm like, I've never written a historical romance.
And so I was just like, you know, that sounds intimidating, but fun.
I remember initially I was like really scared.
I was like, I don't think I could write a book without murder in it.
But I'll give it a try.
So I actually read so many historical novels.
I actually used it as a textbook.
