I would analyze it, break it apart and try to figure out how do you write romance?

And it's not easy.

But yeah.

And I remember the last half of this novel, it doesn't exist anymore, but I actually added in a sword fighting scene and murder.

And then my, my editor was like, Joe, you got it.

Yes, she's very respectful, but she's kind of like my co-pilot.

So she understands my vision.

But sometimes I get so obsessed with something that doesn't belong in the story, like sword fighting, that she'll kind of just give me a nudge.

And it's up to me.

In the end, I could be like, no, I need my sword fighting scene.

But I really respect...

her as an editor.

And in all the times that she's given me advice, it has been like better for my book.

So I trust her a lot.

This is a fun question because I do believe books are political, but when I write, I don't actually think of, oh, what is going on in the political climate right now?

Because I'm such a history nerd, I just focus on the history first.

but then I find that as I'm writing about the historical period it becomes political because history keeps repeating itself and so it was not intentional originally but then as I was writing it and researching I'm like hey this feels exactly the same as what's going on right now and then that's when I'm more aware of the discourse going on I do more research about the discourse the current discourse and then

But at the same time, I try not to let it affect my book too much because I'm trying to take historical facts and just give readers what I've found.

And I find that a lot of the arguments for and against book banning back then, the same language is being used right now.

So I found that really interesting.
