Yeah, it was a hard period of my life.

Because I think a lot of writers...

Our identity gets intertwined with whether we can tell a story or not.

So after a decade of trying to get this book published, it didn't work out.

And so around 2016, I was like, I give up.

I'm not going to get published.

I don't think...

This is the path for me.

So I'm like, I'm going to go into teaching.

I'm sure that's much more easier.

But then I tried a year of teaching and I was just like, oh my gosh.

It wasn't for you?

It was not for me.

It was so hard.

And so I'm like, okay, let me go back to writing.

And when I...

tried writing I realized that British historical like when I tried to write about British history it was already really tainted by all the years of rejection and so I'm like I want like to start a fresh chapter and so I looked at into different histories and Korean history was actually the last history I considered because I think I grew up

kind of with assumptions about what Korean history would be like.

And I thought it, I didn't think it would be very interesting to me.

But then finally, I was like, okay, you know what?
