And I just wanna say this in case you hear it in the news, bear with me.
There's this thing called net overseas migration.
It's also called like the NOM.
It's basically overall how many people did we gain or lose as a country in terms of population in a year.
Um and you you figure that out by taking the number of people who moved here minus the number of people who left.
That's all that is.
So don't get freaked out if you hear that number.
But basically the government wants to reduce that figure.
Yeah.
The reason why Tony Burke said that he wants to reduce this figure and the government wants to reduce this figure is housing.
Like that was one of the key things that he came out with in his
speech.
But I think that it's too simplistic to say that this is all just happening because Labour's concerned about housing, as you pointed out, Sarah.
This is coming off the back of One Nations policy announcement.
They want to actually get the NOM to that like net figure into negative numbers.
So they actually want more people leaving than they want coming into Australia for the next like several years.
And a big part of their policy was really to target international students and temporary skilled workers.
So at the time that this policy was announced, Pauline Hansen said, quote, families are competing with hundreds of people for rental accommodation.
Patients are stuck in ambulances because there are not enough hospital beds.
Young Australians are being locked out of home ownership while wages and infrastructure fail to keep up.
