How am I going to survive?
They're on the last day of their job.
They're up a ladder in a freezing cold, windy, stormy British coastal bay.
They're like fiddling with some wonky guttering.
They've got horrible damp rainwater all down the back of their neck.
They're struggling, physically struggling up this ladder, you know, between heaven and earth to work out.
what it means to have finally got this thing they've been dreaming of, which is freedom, release, back in the world.
And it's a world they don't really understand.
If you think about the amount of changes that have happened in the last 15 years, I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to say they've been away for 15 years because I think you learn it in the second page or something.
But don't let that ruin your first two pages, I hope.
The thing is, so many changes that we've been living with are...
like whether that, whether they're kind of social or in our own lives, when you like the incremental calcification of like us as beings mean that we often don't notice these, like these things that build up these changes in the way that we live.
And I wanted a character who could come in and be a kind of alien observer because I feel like that's actually quite truthful to how a lot of us feel and experience our lives as we wander around.
But it,
I think it takes watching somebody else experience the novelty of, I don't know, automated checkouts.
For Rothko, they weren't there when that was happening.
So suddenly they're just in this world where things are different and they're trying to get their head around a lot.
So watching somebody just land in it, I hope, is a bit of a reintegration with kind of how impossible our own inabilities can feel, is my hope.
They have just spent a long time in a very isolating environment.
