So they have this kind of backed up loneliness.
And also they're, you know, a trans person.
They have the loneliness of not even feeling at home in their own experience of having a body, you know, physically existing in the world.
So there's a lot of things going against them feeling connected to people or place or self.
But actually, I think that they're really yearning for, like,
for beautiful things.
Yeah, I mean, Dion, who is this
that wonderful young person, she sees Rothko, she sees him.
And I think sometimes for all of us, whatever our gender presentation is or isn't, whatever, like we all know how it is to feel caught in our own inability to see, know, hold ourselves, but then to be loved by someone and it's like, this person sees me.
Also it's active, it's an action.
Dion is showing her love in an action.
And like for Rothko, it's a really beautiful and big moment.
It's a moment of building trust with another human being, letting themselves feel the shame and the panic, but kind of also just being held there
in a gentle way.
It's a big deal, but also it's not a big deal.
It's just normal.
It's just normal.
But then for Rothko and Dion, the novel is set in the present day, but they were teenagers 20 years ago, 15 years ago.
