I began the writing process with Rothko.
They were the clearest to me.
They kind of came first.
But when I was thinking about where they came from, I was thinking about these, the kind of twin spirits that govern our subconscious.
and our conscious reality.
In Jung's Red Book, which is a book that I found on this kind of auspicious day, and I've written about it in this essay I wrote called On Connection, I was really blown away when I found this book, and I was blown away most poignantly by this theory I discovered that for Jung, a person is
like, ruled by two spirits, the spirit of the depths and the spirit of the times.
And in all of us, we have these two spirits at play that are kind of our governing bodies, really.
And the spirit of the depths is the part of us that is tuned into, you know, the eternal subconscious, the well that we all draw from, our place of our dreams and our madness and...
the place of masks and imagery that are common across cultures and times.
And then the spirit of the time is the part of us that is living for respectability, for some kind of sense of success, whatever that might be, whether it's the success of being accepted by your peers as having a life that's
noble or like in some way means something you know to other people whether that's a kind of service or your position in your family your position at work whatever it might be and for Jung if a person is ruled too fully by one spirit but not the other well that's when neuroses and madness comes in and that's where a person begins to suffer and in my life I've always felt closest to that spirit of the depths and it used to infuriate me how I couldn't sense that spirit
enough in others you know and then I it was a big moment when I realized well actually people are ruled by different you know different spirits and who am I to judge or the quality or the validity of someone else's experience it was it was a beautiful moment of me understanding and kind of getting out of my own arrogance basically and just so anyway all that to say that
I realised that Rothko, I wanted their parents, Rothko and Soraya's parents, you know, Meg is basically entirely from the spirit of the depths.
She lives there, you know, she is in madness and abandon.
She had suffered a lot in her life and her suffering is manifested in such a way that she really does live in the wound.
She can't escape it.
And Rothko's father, Ezra,
He is much more driven by the idea that life must be for something.
You know, he's also suffered in his life, but he is much more resolute in his decision that he wants to believe in the validity of work, of ambition, of success.
