Connelly had a specific idea for how to use the grand jury to get people talking.
His eye was on 45-year-old Louis Jr., the oldest of Tom's three younger brothers, the heir to the family business, and the person who allegedly told the project manager to empty those half-full dumpsters.
Connolly didn't think that Lewis had participated in the kidnapping or murder, but he did have a feeling that he maybe was involved in some sort of cover-up.
So, he offered Lewis full immunity in exchange for his testimony.
And with that, Lewis took the stand on August 29, 1996.
He admitted that he, yes, did order for the dumpsters to be emptied early, but he said it was because Tom used them to dispose of Anne-Marie's personal items to hide the affair from his wife.
Lewis even gave Tom an alibi for the morning of June 28th, at the time detectives believed that Tom was likely disposing of her body.
He said that,
The two of them were in a business meeting about a possible new investment.
By the end, Lewis had not given up anything that would have incriminated Tom.
But Conley had something up his sleeve.
The immunity grant required truthful testimony.
If Lewis lied, he could be charged with perjury and he could actually lose that deal.
And Lewis must have figured out that he was in some sort of trouble because about five weeks after his first appearance on October 8th, 1996, he asked to go back in front of the grand jury because he wanted to clarify a couple, quote, misstatements that he had made.
But even when he did that, he still didn't say anything that necessarily incriminated Tom.
He just admitted to his own affair.
Oh, my God.
He called everyone.
