And this was something that we looked forward to all year.
Since I was one of the youngest girls, it took us on the longer side to get across the lake.
And by the time we got there, it was clear that something was off with the older kids that were already on the island.
But not thinking much, my friends and I set up our tent and began to explore.
While we were walking around, we stumbled upon a tree stump with a circle carved into the cut edge and lines coming from the center, similar to lines you would maybe see on a compass.
At the edge of the stump where the lines met the circle, there were different rocks and crystals placed on each intersection next to different symbols carved next to each line.
They were pretty and being a kid, I picked one up as a souvenir and I put it into my pocket.
When we got back to the main camping area to have dinner, we walked into absolute chaos.
The older boys and girls bunks were pleading with our counselors to radio back to camp and let them go back to their bunks because there were, quote, scary carvings on the trees and they felt like there was something watching them.
After some investigation, we located around 15 to 20 carvings on the trees, each with different symbols and intersecting lines and circles.
The same symbols that were carved into the stump that my friends and I found.
Shapes that I can only describe like the sticks hanging in the woods in the Blair Witch Project.
After that, some of the staffers spooked as well and called the camp who came by to take whoever was too scared back on a pontoon boat and back to the camp.
My bunk ended up staying the night and we were sent to bed at around 9.30 or 10 p.m.
The next morning, we woke up at sunrise and loaded everything back into the boats and paddled back to camp for breakfast.
At breakfast, we learned that when the first canoes arrived on shore, there was a fire burning, an empty boat, and a pair of men's boots laying on the beach.
What they thought at the time was a clear sign that there was someone already camping there.
However, when the staff combed the area, no one was there, and there was no way that a person would have been able to leave without their boat as we were way too far from the shore to swim.
By this point, our camp director made an announcement that if anyone took anything from the island, they needed to give it to him, and it would be returned back to the island.
They didn't give us any more information, but it was clear that there was something larger at play here, something that they didn't want to mess with.
