So the first step was figuring out exactly when Gareth was last seen alive.
The accelerated decomposition made a precise time of death impossible to determine via autopsy.
And not only was his work classified, he was just a secretive person with very few friends who knew very little about his life.
MI6 wasn't helpful either.
Detectives wanted to interview Gareth's colleagues directly and inspect MI6 documents, but they were shut down for national security reasons.
They didn't even have the security clearance to know who Gareth had been working with.
The British National Counterterrorism Force handled that part of the investigation.
They passed along anonymized notes stripped of anything above the police's clearance level.
Which makes you think he must have been in some pretty serious stuff.
Of course.
No, he was definitely doing really serious stuff.
I mean, they, yeah.
We still don't know what he was doing, which I think says a lot.
it yeah it makes you think it's very serious otherwise you just say he wasn't working on anything that big there's nothing to share like they're passing anonymized notes making sure that there's nothing in there that the police don't have clearance for and what they finally established was gareth got back to the uk on august 11th 2010 that was 12 days before his body was found
He had returned from a six-week trip to the US after attending a Las Vegas cybersecurity conference called Black Hat, which caters to law enforcement and intelligence professionals.
And a little extra context, so Black Hat in the tech world means a hacker willing to violate laws and ethical norms.
The conference was somewhat ironically named because it wasn't really for hackers, though it takes place right before its sister event, DEF CON, which is for hackers.
It's common enough for spies to attend DEF CON undercover that attendees have a tradition of giving out awards for outing the real identities of, quote, feds.
So that year, Black Hat ran from July 24th to July 29th, ending 13 days before Gareth returned to the U.K.,
But people close to him confirmed that this wasn't strange.
