Scotland Yard's new investigation would end in pessimism, though.
They collected DNA from Gareth's MI6 colleagues, but none matched anything from the crime scene.
Though, to be fair, the DNA profiles from the scene were so fragmented, it would have been impossible to conclusively match them with really anyone regardless.
In November of 2013...
18 months after the inquest, police closed the case again.
They concluded Gareth most likely zipped himself into the bag alone and died accidentally after failing to escape.
As for the impossibly clean crime scene, they shrugged it off as evidential contradictions and gaps in our understanding.

laughing gas from the dentist yeah i feel like i'm taking laughing gas from the dentist like loopy up to it because it's just so clear to me i feel like that he just didn't do this to himself but they're really insisting that that's what happened and i am not alone in this gareth's family still really believed that this entire thing was cover-up for something more sinister
And that is really the end of the formal investigation for now.
