The inquest hearing opened in the last week of April 2012, 20 months after Gareth was found dead.
Since police hadn't talked Peter into their version of events, he testified that Gareth was murdered.
Over seven days, every aspect of the case was examined.
With no suspects, it was the closest thing to a trial they were likely to have.
Gareth's sister testified about his unhappiness at MI6 and her family's devastation that MI6 hadn't reported him missing earlier.
Regarding the women's clothing, witnesses testified that a shopkeeper had sold Gareth items he claimed were for his girlfriend, although he wasn't dating anyone.
And police revealed that Gareth had taken two women's fashion design courses in 2009 and 2010.
Three of Gareth's colleagues from GCHQ and MI6 testified, but their identities were so top secret that they were only referred to as F, G, and K in the coroner's court, and they were hidden behind a screen.
Even anonymously, they had very little to offer in this.
Nobody could rule out Gareth's work playing a role in his death, but there was no clear evidence that he had been killed for being a spy either.
On May 2nd, 2012, the coroner determined that Gareth Williams was likely suffocated or poisoned and that his death was a premeditated criminal act.
Under British policing rules, this meant Scotland Yard had to conduct an entirely new investigation.
Gareth's family was relieved the bondage narrative was rejected, but devastated by how obstructive MI6 had been the entire time.
Not to mention the investigative time wasted on leads like the unknown DNA profile that turned out to be a contamination issue.
