The toxicology report eventually came back with traces of alcohol and GHB, a drug commonly used to facilitate sexual assaults known as a date rape drug.

But the pathologist explained that both are produced naturally as human tissues decays.

The faint positive signals were almost certainly from decomposition and not from exposure.

And because of that same decomposition, a wide range of other possible drugs or poisons, including chloroform, would have broken down completely and would not be able to be detected.

Yeah.

And they're thinking about poison here.

Like, detectives knew Russian foreign agents often used poison in London.

Just four years before Gareth's death in 2006, Russian exile and former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko was murdered in London using polonium-210.

It was a rare radioactive toxic compound.

That was like the, I think it was, he was poisoned while he was drinking tea, but there was another one where they used to put the, like at the end of umbrellas, they would put needles and they would poke people, like their targets as they were going, so you could never figure out who was poisoning.

Yeah.

I remember when the Alexander one happened too because he just slowly decayed over time and they kept posting pictures of him in the news and it was so scary.

And so they're thinking of that too.

And so Gareth's body was tested for polonium-210 along with many other poisons.

Unlike most substances, polonium wouldn't disappear during decomposition because it's radioactive.

But all of those tests came back negative.

Then the couple that they'd been looking for turned out to be a dead end, a quote, red herring who had nothing to do with the case.

And then the DNA profile from Gareth's hand fell apart completely.

As detectives prepared for the spring 2012 inquest, the lab sent an apologetic message.
