So even then, in 2016, I was like, journalistically, this is a waste of time.
But as a spectacle, he sure does know how to enact a media spectacle, yeah?
So I just knew that that's...
what he was going to do.
That's what he has been doing for 10 years.
And I think for me, as a Black journalist, I just know that so many of us over the years would criticize our white peers for allowing him to spew
and racist rhetoric.
And so we used to call out our white peers for not having any sort of journalistic guardrails, right?
So for me to then come as a black journalist and say, I co-sign this now just because black journalists are doing it.
I just, I felt like I could not do that personally.
And so it wasn't just about protesting Trump
himself.
It more so was about refusing to participate in formats and charades that degrade the journalistic profession and that I knew would degrade the Black women on stage and that would degrade this experience that Black journalists come for for this conference, which is to fill our cups so that we can go back into the field and do the hard work.
So I just did not want to be a part of
shams and charades and- And stunts and tricks.
And stunts and tricks and spectacle.
I just would rather people be honest about the spectacle about it all.
Yes, there were headlines and all, but again,
I just, I sat in that room and I, the energy in that room of the journalists, we were all so angry, felt so disrespected.
