They sit for quite a long time before I publish them.
And uh my own sense of the language changes or, you know, it changes with me and something that didn't seem possible becomes possible and and so I'm I'm very interested in that.
But it's um
i i i I I I wonder whether it's the same with any work of art, but I have a feeling that artists sometimes really know that that's the moment it's finished.
And I don't know any translator that really feels that a translation is
ever finished.
It's always somehow underway and might change.
Um but there was a very good part at the beginning of your question, which I've now forgotten, um, which I wanted to answer.
Um oh
The loss.
I mean, everyone talks about um
You know, what's lost in translation and the awareness of that.
But I really like to focus on the other side of it and what is gained in translation.
Um first of all, I mean, of course, everything would be lost if nobody did it.
Um, so you know, first of all, there's a gain.
But also sometimes poems take on new lives in different languages.
They become different things, they respond to the times differently, they acquire different meanings.
things and so I'm a great believer in in looking at it as a a kind of expansion and uh uh a s you know, you set something off into the into the blue and who knows what it will become.
Oh well there's a great line from Brecht, um, where he uh when he was young and he talks about um
uh having theories of poetry.
