She says, but I did that on purpose.
She said to throw something so that everybody would be invited.
I made sure I reached out to everybody personally so that it wasn't her passing the message along to her children, that it was me passing the message along to the kids.
So they would have to refuse grandma as opposed to having to refuse mom or to listen to mom's story.
So she says, I always did stuff like that.
She says, so I reached out to the grandkids and I said, your mom's mad at me, but she'll get over it.
She says, so I even would like set it up to say, well, I know your mom's mad, but your mom was just in a bad mood.
And she says, I wanted them to always have my version of it and that I was calm, that there was nothing wrong and that there was no reason that they shouldn't come.
And I said, so you gaslit your grandchildren, like everybody.
And she went, yeah.
Okay.
So I explain all this to Riley and she goes, she goes, Karen, I appreciate how my mom is saying it to you and how you're saying it to me.
She says that you're actually explaining her tone of voice.
You're actually using a tone of voice that is familiar to me.
She says, the way that you're saying she says it to the kids, because I would speak to my kids about it and ask them why they went when I told them something.
And they would say, oh, well, I heard what you said, but grandma said it wasn't a big deal.
And it was just you in a mood.
which is exactly what she was trying to do, was to dismiss her daughter's response and how she treated her daughter and the feelings that she had a right to, the protection, everything, the healthiness that she deserved.
And she tried to just completely normalize her own behavior so that the children would see healthier behavior as the problem.
And Riley says to me, this is worth everything to me because when you're trying to come out of this toxic family and all of these families, including the family that I was in with my own partner and my own children, and I'm trying to now fix what's toxic in my own family, in my own relationships, it's really good to hear that my mom knew exactly what she was doing.
