Like, that's probably also why the combination of being shy and that language barrier, I wouldn't really approach people or talk to people because I was translating in my head before I spoke.

Whereas now, whether I'm Afrikaans in the Afrikaans or English environment, I think in the language that I'm speaking.

But back then, I was thinking in Afrikaans and I was like, right, I need to translate.

And so it took me a bit longer to reply to or respond to people.

Yeah, yeah.

And quite often use the wrong words or tenses or stuff.

But yeah, so pretty much just thrown in the deep end to have to speak it on a daily basis.

And I think that's where I picked it up because my first time using it that much was here.

Yeah, like I would think about what I want to say before I say it.

So I would hear it and I would like, right, this is what I want to say.

And then I would translate it and I was like, okay, now I need to say it.

Yeah, but that was back then.

And that's why fully immersing yourself in that culture is the best way to do it.

Because now when I go home, predominantly I speak Afrikaans.

And yes, okay, it takes me a couple of days to not get stuck on words.

But the moment I'm in an Afrikaans environment, it just flows.

And I just think Afrikaans, speak Afrikaans.

And then I come home to New Zealand.

I've got so many hoes.

And then I come home to New Zealand.
