Both of those would not be healthy.
What you would lift is a weight that when you lifted it, you literally felt a tension.
There was some resistance and it does hurt sometimes,
but it hurts tolerably, and that's the weight you'll choose.
Now, that weight is going to be different.
Me, you, even if I'm the same age as someone, same gender as someone, it's still going to be different.
So what we have to do with our kids is we have to make sure that they're going to the emotional gym and that their weight is tolerable for them.
Not too light.
and not too heavy, and then they'll learn to get better and better and they'll be able to go to the gym and lift heavier and heavier weights.
So that's when I talk about that word tolerable, which is zone of proximal development if we look at Vygotsky, but also Goldilocks, right?
It's just that not too much, not too little.
um example not always um and my kids are 19 and 22 now so um luckily i don't have really those moments anymore um but the last time i can really think about it is my son doing driving lessons and i literally lost it you get out of this car and i've never you know we stopped in the middle of the street his door's open you know so i'm an expert in this stuff
so there is no silver bullet but what we have to do is look after ourselves as much as possible so checking in with ourselves are we really getting far too stressed are we just literally walking around in a stress well then that's not okay because we're not going to be good for our kids and that's when you take the night off and let's say you know if you have if we're lucky enough to have supports around quite a few of us do but we almost feel judged for asking for that support
But absolutely do.
But what I like to do is when I talk about the brain, I talk about it as red and green.
And I talk about when we go into the red brain, you're starting to get really stressed.
I can almost look at my kids when they were getting stressed and I'd almost watch the thermometer.
You know, I'd go down and I'd go, they're going into stress.
This is not about me.
If they yell at me, this is not about me.
