In pickle season, we added to the chef loves pickles lore that will have more payoffs in the future and has already had a big bit come out last Halloween.

And just saying the word pickles has my mouth watering.

Have you ever been to a deli where they set down a bowl of pickles along with your water glasses before you've even ordered?

That's some hospitality, in my opinion.

Chef's pickled watermelon rinds are also mentioned in season ten, episode thirteen, The Corner Store, over on Nothing Much Happens.

And man, are we getting into some heavy hitting stuff here?

But what do you think about bread and butter pickles?

I was virulently opposed until I tried the Trader Joe's ones.

I can eat a whole jar of those.

I quite enjoyed writing the pickle puns in this story.

And I like thinking of Chef who might look like ER Fightmaster rolling their eyes as they mixed the brine.

Our last story, The First Signs of Autumn, is sort of a combination of the two previous ones.

I didn't remember many particulars when I was picking this set of stories, so when they go together well, that always feels like a little harmony from my subconscious.

The mention of journaling is a reference to another story, season sixteen, episode twelve,

So this is the same protagonist as in that one.

For me, the sign that autumn is coming that feels most impactful is when the daylight noticeably shifts.

That has always felt like back to school for me.

When it's a bit dark when you get up, when you go to take your shower after dinner and it's day, but when you get out, it's night.
