One was through the taxes, which, you know, anybody who stayed in a hotel knows that those can be really significant.

And two was negotiating with the hotel.

And these brands, they really do this.

They all emphasize that they really work on a case by case basis.

So one thing that I thought was really interesting is that I really pressed the hoteliers.

Well, once you've made a deal with somebody and they've agreed to stay, let's say, for six months or eight months, what happens if their plans change?

I mean, aren't you going to ding them just as any landlord would ding somebody who tried to get out early?

And they really emphasized for me, oh, no, we're in the hotel business.

We're in the hospitality business.

We try to be very flexible.

Some of them just openly admitted, yeah, we probably wouldn't charge anybody anything.

I was sort of surprised that they would say stuff like that because you would think they would be really married to the idea of people upholding their contracts.

But

But then again, they can just turn around and rent out that room for a night or two.

You know, they can pretty quickly find somebody new to occupy it in a way that a traditional landlord would not.

Yeah, it's really interesting.

There's a story in the Wall Street Journal today about young people who live in co-living arrangements.

which seemed ridiculous in a way.

They pay big amounts of money to live in these really small rooms, but they do it because there's a social element to these buildings where they're kind of programming your social life for them.

And that seemed to be part of the thinking in these upscale extended stay hotels as well.
