But I as a as a girl who was hurt, the idea of a solution to that hurt through a smaller body was like an elixir.
It was like, and the clapping because I lost half a pound, whether it was because I starved myself for the whole week or binged on a Monday and Tuesday and then starved myself, it didn't really matter.
So it taught me these rules about food and exercise that were bad for me, actually, and really harmed my relationship with my body and also harmed my relationship with food.
And for someone who's traumatized and poor and has low self-esteem,
I really think that Weight Watchers damaged me.
Well, that particular experience damaged me.
I was 16.
It was really clear that I was a hurt kid.
And they took my money and taught me that I needed to walk really fast and sweat and count everything.
If I was hungry to drink a glass of water, just to check that you are actually hungry.
And all them things...
really fed into this idea that I could win or lose at something.
And winning or losing at Weight Watching became like the template through which I saw success, I suppose, for years.
And I succeeded the first time, most women do.
And then it becomes the, oh, I did it before, I'll do it again.
And maybe one day I had the feeling like I'd reached the destination.
My body felt good.
I looked good in the photograph.
I fit into the size 12 Topshop jeans.
But that never happened again.
