Poverty is a destiny and poverty is caused by
unequal structures that are created by society.
Poverty isn't created by bad people.
Like my parents weren't bad people.
They were underserved and hurt people and were not supported by the state to escape that or to have that rectified.
And so for me, poor, telling the story was about firstly being completely honest about it.
Other books that I'd read about poverty never named things like rape
They never say the words.
They skirt around it.
Like for me, it was like, I want this to be really honest about what it's like for the child to experience these things.
So that was the first thing that I, after I finished, I thought I've achieved this, the honesty.
But the other thing is the darkness and the light.
And the darkness and the light isn't just from society.
the teachers or the social workers, the darkness and the light is also from my parents and from the relationships that I had with them and the community that I grew up in.
So while it was dark and deprived and I was hungry and neglected, there was also music and there was hugs and there was books and there was moments of joy.
So when I finished Poor,
I was like, I've actually shown the darkness and the light.
The one aim for Right and Poor, I'm actually an academic and I'm a psychologist and I don't actually think poor and hungry are memoirs.
I think they're social documents.
It's me using my intellectual understanding of society and my own story to try to highlight some things.
