And what saved me in childhood was the love of the people outside of my home, Mrs. Arkinson, Mr. Pickering.
If you imagine, in myself as a child exists two narratives.
At the same time, the biggest and the loudest narrative because of my family background, the heroin addiction, the prostitution, the prisons, the crime, the neglect.
The loudest narrative was no one's ever going to come for you.
No one loves you.
The second narrative, and I call it a song or a whisper, was planted in me from great people outside of my home.
Mrs. Arkinson always believed that I could achieve greatness, and she never made it dependent on me being a good girl, on me behaving myself and being regulated.
She placed a whisper, another narrative, "'Miss Arkinson thinks you're somebody.'"
Miss Harkinson thinks you're special.
And so my ability to stay alive, to keep fighting forward, to keep trying, to keep picking myself up came from these pockets of sunshine, this other voice, this belief that came from the people outside of my home.
And I wanted to remind people that we can be
that person for somebody who's living in the dark.
Yeah.
And then there's youth workers as well.
So just to say that too, because they always get...
I told the story of three adults in my childhood and Mal was one of them.
He was the youth worker, but the teachers always get their recognition and then he's just ignored.
And the youth work, youth work is just as important as teaching.
But that's the other reason.
