You know, I my own department of psychiatry, Johns Hopkins, supported me in a remarkably wonderful sort of way.
And in fact, whenever I lecture at medical schools or hospitals
I use Hopkins as an example of having done something really right.
Oftentimes in in memoirs and books people talk about all the things that go wrong.
And not this one.
I've no, no.
In this in this case, you know, I've I've I've been blessed.
he was he had a very whimsical mind.
He was a very imaginative scientist and he had a very playful mind.
And I think it allowed him to put enough distance between himself and me when things were difficult that
he didn't take it as terribly personally as it is very easy to do and very humanly, understandably, if you're with somebody who's very depressed or manic and he somehow was able for the most part
to handle it with a certain gentleness and a certain deafness and sheer intellect.
I mean he he was somebody who also read a lot about the illness and one of the things that I think anybody who treats uh depression or bipolar illness does is encourage family members to read a lot and learn a lot about the illness because it does make it easier.
Uh yes uh well we were in his home office one evening and I noticed that his black doctor's bag was up on the file cabinet and I w started wondering, well, why wasn't it in his office where he saw patients?
Why was it at home?
And so I asked him if I could see what was in the bag and he was reluctant.
And so I sort of started rummaging around in it and f and found, you know, prescription pads and stethoscopes and and all that kind of thing.
And then at the bottom I found a vial of antipsychotic medication and a syringe.
And it was very clear, instantly clear to me, that that was for me in case I got manic again and psychotic.
And I was terribly upset and he was upset.
