It was our wedding anniversary, and he gave me a gold ring with a note saying how that he was proud of me not only as you know my husband, but as my colleague.
And I I think he knew what that would mean to me because so much of my concern had been about what my colleagues
would think and what the reaction would be in in the community in which I l I live and so forth.

I suppose it's human nature, you know, that uh you're going to get people who just say incredibly cruel and awful and terrible things and overwhelmingly from my colleagues uh and from people who wrote to me and total strangers, I I felt this incredible amount of support and warmth.
But there is a very large group of people that have very strong religious feelings about the mentally ill.
that it is a you know, it's it's a spiritual issue rather than a medical one.
And there are a lot of people who just kinda hate for living, you know.
You always wonder who has the kind of time to sit around and, you know, figure out your address and write vitriol, but turns out there are quite a few of 'em.
Yes, it was it was it was not a fabulous uh timing.
Uh although in some ways, you know, I I I used to read to him, uh partly 'cause he was dyslectic and when he was sick he didn't always have the energy to work.
And you know, he he loved the exuberant lives.
I mean he was he was somebody who loved science.
He loved hearing about the lives of scientists who loved what they d were doing.
So in a way it wasn't quite as odd.
It was very difficult once he had died to finish the book.
Well, I think that anyone who's been through cancer uh cancer treatments will recognize this that the the difficult to treat cancers there's just enough promise now and the the rate of research and and really game changing research is staggering.
So you're in a situation where you have some reason to hope
Even though you know that overwhelmingly it's unlikely that the person may live.
