And so I spoke to the league about it and the VP who used to have diversity in his title and no longer does, his title is now like league leadership or something super vague.
Diversity is no longer part of his title.
He said, oh, well, we didn't end the program.
We just stopped funding it and it's no longer required.
And I said, okay, so then the program itself doesn't exist.
It's not a program.
If it's not required and you're not funding it, then what is it?
And so he tried to say that they ended it because it was only meant to like spur this action in teams.
And he felt that teams were in a good place with it.
But when I talked to coaches who had been part of it, I talked to one coach who is currently an offensive assistant for a club in the NFL, and he was intended to work in the quarterback room.
And that was kind of the purpose of this mandate was to get minority coaches who
close to the quarterbacks, close to offensive game planning to the key positions on offense, which would be offensive line and quarterback and close to the offensive coordinator.
And this coach told me he was intended to be in the quarterback room.
And then they moved him to a different, less important offensive position because it was determined among the team.
that the quarterback could not have too many voices in his ear, which kind of reminds me of a Caleb Williams scenario from a couple of years ago, his rookie year when, you know, they were trying to limit who could actually talk to Caleb.
So that was really interesting to me.
And so this, this, another example, this was another example of a program that had the best intentions that clubs were not always using the way that it was intended.
Like they were hiring the offensive assistant who was a minority, and then they were putting him with running backs or putting him with receivers or
which are two positions where black coaches have often been funneled into and get stuck in those positions without forward progress.
So that was interesting to me because, I mean, we interviewed Nathan Shielhase, who is the Rams offensive coordinator now.
