I went international director, I think I was called.
And Martin O'Neill came in, replaced Steve Bruce and really turned things around.
And it looked like I think we just beat Arsenal, you know, the week I left.
So, you know, there was no sign that things would go the way they go.
But that's football and I'd never criticise anybody.
I know how difficult it is to run a football club and it's all too easy for outsiders to come in and say, oh, they did this wrong, they did that wrong.
It's a hell of a battle.
The kitchen is hot, you know.
when you're trying to run a football club.
And if you don't get all the bits and all the magnets going the right way, it can prove very, very difficult indeed.
So I think Ellis Short put an awful lot of money into the club in my time and thereafter.
Looking back, obviously, he'd say he'd do things differently.
I'm sure he would.

playoff final last year that you know last kick of the game nearly um you know they got turned over by charton uh which repeated history from my time so so that's difficult but um i suppose and personally my son still looks at me and says dad why didn't you make me follow arsenal or man city the other the fella has almost depression at this stage you know um but but they have a great saying up in sunderland um
You know it as well, Don, from my time, keep the faith.
And it's very difficult to keep the faith right now, but I still have it.
And I think something can come good from it.
It's too big a club to see, you know, just being out in the shadows.
