So, I mean, that's kind of the process that I had here was, I mean, the first thing was,

Sanco Christopher was the US colored troops.

He was one of the Black troops that enlisted to fight for the Union in the Civil War, to fight for his liberation.

And the National Archives has a few for troops that applied for disability pensions, which many of them did.

there's all this information that comes available because they have to document who they were.

There are no birth certificates.

So that was the first kind of where I actually was like, okay, he's naming the person who was his enslaver.

It is a plantation.

And that was something that

I didn't have a personal knowledge of slavery in my family until doing this research.

It was like, I'm getting this general history.

There's roots.

But that disability pension file, which is like two inches thick and hundreds of documents, it kind of started me on this path of like, OK, he was enslaved.

This is where it happened.

And I learned they're all cotton plantations.

then I was able to kind of see through other documents like land ownership and how people started to buy land and form community.
