That's the kind of training that needs to happen.
And what's happened is basically unleashing ICE officers to basically do this work all around the country is creating a lot of confusion and it's creating even death.
I mean, as you see what happened in Houston, what happened in Maine,
It shouldn't be happening.
We, the government, and our officers that we authorize to use lethal force should not be doing what they are doing.
I mean, there's dozens of people that have been killed.
There are lots of people who are dying now in detention centers.
That's not the country, Tim, that I know.
The context here is that from my beginning of my work on these issues, when I first arrived as a senator-elect in Washington, I recount some of this in the book, President George W. Bush working with him on fixing the border and immigration reform.
Those were historic times because John McCain, Ted Kennedy and others.
And that's the solution.
Those are the kinds of solutions that should have been passed.
But then Dennis Hastert and the Republicans, which basically are still the same one, the same kind of philosophy in the House of Representatives.
They killed it because they realized then that having a broken border and a broken migration system was for their political benefit.
I say it in the book.
It's the low hanging fruit that was identified by.
uh donald trump and others in 2016 and then again in 2024 and so coming into 2020 when i go to mexico i knew we had to transform the relationship and part of that was fixing the border and dealing with uh immigration and migration so we spent a lot of time on that
In my view, the Biden administration woke up about that, but it was too late.
That's a crisis emergency that I described in the book.
We knew and they knew what needed to be done.
