Because within a few years of Gypsy's birth, Dee Dee began taking her infant daughter to doctors with a concern.
She said the baby wasn't breathing right in her sleep.
Sleep apnea, she would suggest to them.
And doctors would run tests, but the tests would find nothing.
But Dee Dee would keep going.
And it was the first thread in what would become a two-decade medical fiction.
Just a story so elaborate and so detailed and so just relentlessly maintained that almost no one who encountered it ever questioned it out loud at least.
And I feel like before we get any further, I really wanna talk about Munchausen syndrome by proxy to really get what was going on in this house.
Now today, clinicians call it factitious disorder imposed on another or FDIA.
And it is widely considered one of the most difficult forms of child abuse to detect and also to prove or even to stop.
So that's kind of why I want to explain it just so everybody knows.
So like maybe you actually spot it or notice it and you could even report it if you see it happening.
I also want to mention something important to note is that Dede Blanchard was never formally diagnosed.
She never sat across from a psychiatrist and received that label, and now she never can.
But experts who have studied this case say her behavior fits the profile with almost textbook precision.
So we can safely say she had it, but she never actually got diagnosed.
So I just want to make that clear.
