So in the middle of 1990, Dee Dee, now 23 years old, met a young man at a bowling alley, and his name was Rod Blanchard.

Now, Rod was 17, and the relationship started to move pretty fast, pretty quickly.

And within months, Dee Dee was pregnant, and before the year was out, the two were married.

And Rod would later admit he was in over his head almost immediately.

I mean, he was just a teenager.

And by his own account, the wedding happened not because he was in love, but because it felt like the right thing to do.

And unfortunately it wouldn't last.

And Rod said that he woke up on his 18th birthday, took stock of his life and realized the truth that he didn't love her and he left before the baby was even born.

Now on July 27th, 1991, Dee Dee gave birth to a daughter and she was 24 years old, newly separated and now a single mother.

And the baby's name was a compromise of sorts.

Dee Dee simply liked the name Gypsy, and Rod was a fan of the band Guns N' Roses.

So Gypsy, Rose, Blanchard.

Yeah, makes sense.

And the story Dee Dee would tell about Rod for the next two decades was very different from the truth, because she painted him as just a deadbeat, an addict, a father who wanted nothing to do with his sick little girl.

That's what she told her family, and that's what she told charities, and most devastatingly, that's what she told Gypsy.

But the reality was that Rod at the very least paid child support consistently for years, along with extra money for birthdays and Christmases.

And he would call and he tried to stay in the picture, but the arrangement was almost from the start entirely on Dee Dee's terms.

She controlled when he could call, when he was told, what he was allowed to know.

And Rod would later put it simply saying he was just a kid himself at that point.

And like everyone else in this story, he didn't know the half of it.
