And in the chaos of the evacuation, Dee Dee and Gypsy surfaced at a shelter where the story practically told itself.
You know, the single mother in a wheelchair-bound, chronically ill daughter washed out of their home with nothing but each other.
Dee Dee told anyone who asked that their house was gone, destroyed by the storm.
And with it, she said, every single one of Gypsy's medical records.
So every specialist Gypsy had ever seen, every test that had come back clean, every note from a doctor who might have raised an eyebrow, all of it was now gone in an act of God that no one could question and what Dee Dee thought no one could check.
What came next, there would only be one source for Gypsy Rose Blanchard's medical history, and that would be Dee Dee.
So the pair would eventually make their way north to Missouri, first to the small town of Aurora, and then to Springfield, Missouri.
And Springfield did what good communities do for a storm refugee and her dying little girl, and they embraced them.
And in 2008, Habitat for Humanity built them a home of their own, and it was this little pink house on West Volunteer Way.
Now, volunteers put it up with donated labor and donated materials, and they built it for Gypsy.
There was a wheelchair ramp out front, everything on one level, even a hot tub, because Dee Dee said warm water soothed her daughter's aching muscles.
Dee Dee just wanted a hot tub, TBH.
And the generosity kept coming.
And in 2007, the Ole Foundation, a national charity supporting people who genuinely cannot eat without feeding tubes, named Gypsy Rose its Child of the Year.
So she was held up as a symbol of the very community the foundation exists to serve.
Not to mention the trips to Disney World.
There was a wish trip as early as 2001 back in Louisiana and more after the move, courtesy of charities built to give dying children one perfect memory.
And there were newspaper features and fundraisers and free flights, backstage passes, celebrity meet and greets.
And obviously none of these organizations did anything wrong.
They didn't know any better.
